It's Fall but here's what happened this summer at #9 Farms

Hello all can you believe its already the end of September ??? Well it has went fast it seemed like the summer was a blur.......we literally like never go anywhere and just keep busy here on the farm. This year I had a whole lot of tomato plants, a whole lot of cucumber plants I say a whole lot as it was so many I never counted. I had of course started all my plants and with no where to sell them I ended up planting them all......IDK if that was a mistake or a blessing. I took care of all these plants and spent what seemed to be every minute in the high tunnel or in the fields.  When we were in tomatoes and cucumbers which I actually still get some but not as much as June and July and really the tomato plants are maybe one to two tomatoes every few days and they are so tiny. Our huge greenhouse fan died and that's what helped with pollination. Tomatoes are self pollinators but they need wind or touching or air movement to pollinate. The cucumbers are parthenocarpic so these type I grow don't need pollination from insects or pollinators. So where I am headed to in this post is I feel like the summer was a blur as so much time was spent watering and picking this summer. I canned 112 jars of spaghetti sauce all quarts, 72 quart jars of enchilada sauce, 47 quarts of regular tomatoes, 84 pint jars of salsa. These are whet we did for our family, I had a lot of these jars just from my own stash from all our personal canning needs. We go thru about a 100 jars of spaghetti sauce every year sometimes I have even had to purchase it. The tomatoes I use for chili, beans, tomato pudding, butterbeans and tomatoes, soups. My boys have a already gone thru a case of the salsa....tacos, enchiladas, burritos...you name it chips and salsa. It seemed like we spent so much time canning and taking care of the farm. I keep on going despite the severe pain I suffer in my back and all over from the spinal stenosis and the fibromyalgia. I also dehydrated a ton of food for soups, and beans. We eat a lot of beans and pressure can black beans, pinto, navy, and kidney beans for soups, chili etc so with the dehydrated foods I just add them to the soups. I have done, onions, garlic, so many peppers I can't even being to tell you how many, and celery. I am still in peppers and actually have a dehydrator full as I type this. So as you can see this was a busy summer. Getting soap supplies, and canning jars this year has been a true struggle. There are no lids anywhere, no jars, no canning supplies....it's sad real sad. We raise our own chickens for meat and pressure can it and without jars we have NOTHING. I need these jars to feed my family so hopefully there will be some back on the shelves. Not to mention make my jams, pickles and elderberry syrup.
Since this blog is supposed to be about my art I wanted to show you the last paining I was able to complete while Skylar my granddaughter from Alabama was here for 44 days this summer. It was a wonderful time with her she was able to ride her bike all day everyday. We went so long without rain from mid June to mid July that when it actually did rain Dusty called me on my cell phone to tell me "its raining."  So Skybear spent a lot of time outside. We had a blast with her making crafts and using Perler beads to make things. We did go to the bird park...we arrived an hour before closing and it was like no one was there. I absolutely love that place. Oh well trying to play catch up like I do most often and telling you everything I can remember since the last post.

I love the painting. Of course I had a blast painting it....Skylar painted 13 canvases while I painted this...LOL!

Some of the sweet peppers I dehydrated

Just a few of the habaneros I have picked and dehydrated this year

Some of the salsa we canned

Applesauce we did it was like three cases, my boys add this to their oatmeal.

Of course while Skylar was here she helped me in the kitchen here we were canning chicken

This was my BEST year ever of figs so that means lots of fig jam, strawberry fig, and cranberry fig jam.

This was also the best year for grapes we ever had too SO THANKFUL

We hatched chicks while Skylar was here it was awesome and so exciting. She checked on the eggs everyday until the final day and it was one after another of hatched baby chicks.

At the bird park

Budgies at the bird park (my favorite part)

Skylar at the bird park we had so much fun

We had an amazing time with Skylar she loves Snapchat and every night we played on their pic after pic

We spent the Fourth of July together we decorated her bike and a cookout

Colten graduated this year Class of 2020 what a challenging year to graduate but he is very thankful as we are that he graduated. Well done Colten.

As you can see it has been a busy summer.....glad to se fall. I have been making my bracelets too late at night.

Until next time....

Lastest Updates and Happenings Here at #9 Farms

Hello everyone its hard to believe that one is 2020!! To think I remember when it was Y2K and we thought it was so scary and all these things would go wrong with our computers and how we all had to be prepared for the year 2000. Now I am thinking back on the song by the AMAZING Prince "Party like its 1999." Awwww great memories. Now the year 2020 but here the farm it is as though time kept on going without us as we work nonstop and after this show this weekend at The Virginia Flower and Garden Show I am paying the price. It was long hours and very hard work. All our stuff is heavy. I am very slow moving on Monday mornings although the cheese must get done so no time to leisure. We had a great time saw a lot of the other vendors we knew and met a lot more. We enjoyed talking with others and the stories they shared and the friendships we made. That kinda thing makes it all worth it!! Absolutely sure! We love our customers and its always a pleasure to hear what's going on in their lives and seeing their beautiful faces and meeting their families and friends. We have already done two shows this year and never have had a break somewhat of one while Cody and Amelia were here for the holidays. Thursday the 23rd of January my oldest son celebrated his 33rd birthday.......ok I know, now you know I'm old......lol. Shhhhh  we will leave that part out. I kept our grandson Levi and granddaughter Clarrisa for a few hours and had a blast with them.

Clarrisa loves Snapchat too we had fun making faces and her telling me all the toys she has and about a watch she got from Santa and where her sisters were. She came with a bag of goodies Cheetos, banana, and a nutty bar. She ate the banana first, then the Cheetos, drank her cup full "her baba" of "juice." We had to be at the Virginia Beach Convention Center at 3pm that day so Bruce loaded the car and the trailer to get us ready for the show. While I was in "grandma land" not a care in the world about a show or anything else but having fun with the grandkids.

Levi fell asleep in my arms and slept so well it was pure bliss!

Just look at his adorable face!!! #LOVE

After Bruce was done with all the loading and prep work for the show set up, he ate in to play and even cooked popcorn with Clarissa. She told him his popcorn wasn't good. He makes it overt the stove in a pot no microwave popcorn at all. Isa ate the popcorn anyway it was so cute.

Here she is telling him "this candle on the cupcake can't blow out"

Of course the shows well I have been making these bracelets which I enjoy greatly its fun, creative, and relaxing. So even as late as it can be at night when we finally sit down I make bracelets. I set goals to make this # etc. so I can have plenty in different styles, sizes and colors. It is fun and so many folks really like them.

more bracelets I have been making

more bracelets

Since I really never even made any posts of anything during the holidays I wanted to share these beautiful little faces.  Alexis, Ledger and Riggs. You may have remembered them from the summertime when they stayed at our house for 31 days.....which gave grandma and papa a new meaning to taking care of babies. Riggs had just turned one and Ledger had just turned two.  He is a link of some pics from this summer.

Her beautiful family. The Santa suit was actually Colten's when he was a baby and all my boys from Colten down have worn it. Now look!

Cody and Amelia arrived on December 17, 2019 we picked them up at the airport you know the story there, they arrived a few hours later than expected but Cody wanted to go to Cookout so we went waited in line for while as it was like 1:30 am maybe even closer to 2 am. When got home everyone Colten was like "where's mine??" of course I figured everyone would be sleeping.....nope. We were so excited to see them we started off with the goats and chickens, then making jams the next day to canning pickles, you name it Amelia even made beeswax candles, the bracelets. We were ever so grateful to have help and of course they learn a lot in the process...now that Cody was much more interested in learning some of our many skills. We went on the walks at the millpond, went and did some shopping like to 17th Street Surf Shop, visited the OBX so Amelia could see the beach, the monument, Jockey's Ridge, the Atlantic Ocean, shell shops, go to the Avalon Fishing Pier (where me and Bruce met), played games at the pier, all the good ole stuff.

Cody bought us oysters from Murray Nixons and I steamed in the Instant pot which turned out amazing!!

The day we were at the castle on Jockey's Ridge was even a lot more was exposed that day. Its so amazing as when I was a kid I remember the mini golf. You can read all about the hotel, the mini etc. HERE that have been consumed by the mountain of sand. I have been coming to this state park for as long as I can remember. I even remember when I was about 8 my dad and I climbed it and rolled down. That particular day we found the most beautiful shell on the beach it was extremely fragile but I still remember it like it was yesterday. Such a blessing.

While Cody and Amelia were here Cody wanted to make sausage. Well we can do that Cody. So we did!! We bought our first meat grinder in 1995 it lasted for many years, we paid $500 for this grinder from a real restaurant store which I was like "WOW" then....but these newer ones cost more....Cody and Bruce enjoyed the process, Cody was very good at it.

The sausage from when it was twisted you can see the video here

one of the most favorite foods I had made in Codys childhood was peach salsa, he requested we make it while he was here and he shipped several jars home.

I was making Christmas jam per request even in January

more candles

of course making more candles, I just love this...it reminds me of the years I spent pouring ceramic molds. I even worked at  a ceramic shop before and I bought so many molds.....miss that! I used to go to all the craft shows back in the day selling my ceramics...this was the late 80's and all the way up to 1997. I quite because I was having severe wrist pain from all the heavy mold pouring and come on I had five kids then it was hard to do the shows. Good times!
Made more cinnamon pickles

Pickles, pickles, pickles

Of course can't forget all the soap making.....its like we go from one thing to the next some days I feel like I am on this roller coaster that won't stop.....and I keep yelling "HEY CAN I GET OFF THIS COASTER FOR A MINUTE?" Its been seed starting time, of course I have a bunch of house plants as I always have....and do enjoy them greatly....so I LOVE SEED TIME!!! Bruce is actually now cleaning up what we call our freezer room (as there are four deep freezers in the room), as he is building yet another light system for my seedlings that will start any day. Last year you may have seen this below on how we start our seeds with the lights I got last year.

we have been taking the boys when we can or Colten does to the skateboard park. Dusty is really good and very much enjoys it.

Colby has been digging it too

Dusty ask everyday if he can go.

One Sunday this year when it was in the upper 70's we went to Mt. Trashmore in Virginia Beach, the boys skated and Bruce and I walked around the skate park and even climbed up the hill. It was wonderful!!

THE NEXT SHOW IS GRASSFIELD HIGH SCHOOL

The next one will be at Grassfield High School on February 22, 2020 in Chesapeake Virginia

Thank you for stopping by and do have a wonderful week. I am hoping to get back to my paintings soon I thought I would but since the last post of the paintings NOPE it has not happened for me. Lots of drawing for my watercolors ready to go...but no painting here lately. Tomorrow we meet with a friend of ours that is going to help us with a website......so stay tuned. YAY!

Week 10 of Donna Downey's 48 Weeks Journal Workshop ~Dream with your Heart~

Hello everyone I have been on a roll lately. Living in the fast lane.....working hard and with living on a farm in the summer I sworny LIFE couldn't be busier. What happened to free easy going summers of childhood.....stay up late catch fireflies or "lighting bugs" as I called them to sleeping in late having your friends waiting on your grandmas couch for me to get up so we could play outside all day....drink in the water-hose and wait for the ice cream man or the "fruit man" to come by in their trucks??? Yeah that was the carefree summers.....and of course making papier mache animals. Yep and listening to my aunt say "you are going to clean this mess up" well those days may be over for me....but those vivid memories still scream SUMMER. Although I work hard I also play hard....and still make my walks everyday (or at least we try). We have been up to our eyeballs in blueberries, blackberries, some peaches, and I have had a few figs here and there, they are coming soon tons of green ones this year. TOMATOES GALORE..........No joke its been a great year. Also I have had so many customers who bought my plants come back and tell me that these plants have been the "BEST" most prolific and "tallest" plants they have ever had. You know I'm doing the happy dance inside to know my little plant babies went on to live good lives and produce so well for others.....I have had the biggest thrill this year of hearing that over and over from folks who bought my plants!! #happydance
So on to the painting,,,,,,,,uh? isn't that what the post is supposed to be about anyway???? Well I am actually multitasking as I type this from bouncing back in forth outside to laundry to folding laundry and adding a video on YouTube and cleaning up the bathroom off of my room. So yep its multitasking. All I can say is "WOW" not only do I go from one process to another "OMG" just amazing process! I can hardly believe how one painting is like my so called favorite and then you do another workshop and bam now its this one is the favorite. This class actually started in 2014 and here it is 2019 and I am just getting back to it. I am sorry I missed the time frame but not all of us can work on our art when we want to, but here I am now getting it done and the class is still available for purchase so its all GOOD!!!! Go to Donna Downey's Website 48 weeks so you can join in on the fun....and see which one of the painting becomes your favorite in your own process.
Here I have tried to show you the gold paint

again the gold paint in more detail and I just love the "dream with your heart" stamp from Unity Stamps

Dreaming of her new adventures and what the future holds for her as she goes forward in search of the new beginnings......what lies ahead can be dreamed with your heart~ Dawn Gallop
the girl really made the whole final touch to the process

like I said many times over "Donna Downey" really makes you feel like your in her studio and you are painting with her....
note the layers

the textures

again in my happy little place on my porch

This is that happy little place if you haven't seen it before

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE REST OF THE WEEKS

Well let me tell you about this little story....I ordered my first prescription Costa sunglasses when Dusty got his glasses which was a really big deal....first off I don't usually a so called name brand. I had justifications for this commitment one we work outside almost all day off and on....so the polarized glasses make them better for your eyes and much clearer. I did get the glass frames as I tried on a bunch and those were the best for me. You need to really protect your eyes well while in the sun. Two white with blue are the same glasses I had when I met Bruce and really never have seen glasses like that before much or ones for me....as Cathi said at the eye doctor (we have known Cathi since the girls were little) she used to live in Gates County and her daughter goes to school with Colten now. She has been working at the eye doctor as long as I can remember and Alexis, Amanda, and Crystal (now Dusty) have worn glasses forever. SO these COSTA prescription sunglasses are a pretty big deal....well it had been six weeks from the time I ordered as they are only made in the Costa lab and then shipped to the eye doctor with my prescription. So its been a right good wait well you know it is summer time.....
Yesterday morning while I was in the chicken coop she called and said UPS had just came and guess what was in the box....with a gift.....MY GLASSES on my birthday too! Yep yesterday I celebrated my 51st birthday.....wtf I always say I ask myself "how did I get here" (a lyric from the Talking Heads song) how did this happen, well it did and now I am 51!

Bruce taking pics and me posing by the Costa Sunglass Case

The morning of my 51st Birthday

NOW I HAVE SAVED THE BEST for LAST............

On Bruce's birthday and my brothers birthday Josh WE HAVE A NEW BABY GRANDSON

Levi Sebastian

Congratulations to our son Bruce Jr. and daughter in law Kimberly for the birth of the fourth child

WOOOOHOOO
Grandma again!!!

He is so adorable of course I see my Jr. all over again....so tiny and precious.
LOVE LOVE LOVE

Look at his tiny precious face and hands oh my goodness heart flutters
BEAUTIFUL
On Sunday I made a big dinner and they came over to visit, my aunt came too I made two cakes a pineapple upside down cake per Bruce's request and a German Chocolate Cake per Colby's request.
I didn't take a pic of the pineapple one I cooked it in the cast iron skillet as Bruce likes the best. Everyone loved the pineapple cake the most they said. So I think perhaps Colby may request that one again.

I had made Bruce his own tiny smash cake (extra cake batter) hehehe

This is the German Chocolate Cake and behind it is the Pineapple Upside Down Cake

Always so much to talk about right.....well I better  close its now time to go collect eggs, make some  goat milk yogurt and finish up things outside.

Have a great week....
btw I am doing better from my sickness I was not feeling good for about two weeks....kept on going but it was hard.
