It's Fall but here's what happened this summer at #9 Farms

Hello all can you believe its already the end of September ??? Well it has went fast it seemed like the summer was a blur.......we literally like never go anywhere and just keep busy here on the farm. This year I had a whole lot of tomato plants, a whole lot of cucumber plants I say a whole lot as it was so many I never counted. I had of course started all my plants and with no where to sell them I ended up planting them all......IDK if that was a mistake or a blessing. I took care of all these plants and spent what seemed to be every minute in the high tunnel or in the fields.  When we were in tomatoes and cucumbers which I actually still get some but not as much as June and July and really the tomato plants are maybe one to two tomatoes every few days and they are so tiny. Our huge greenhouse fan died and that's what helped with pollination. Tomatoes are self pollinators but they need wind or touching or air movement to pollinate. The cucumbers are parthenocarpic so these type I grow don't need pollination from insects or pollinators. So where I am headed to in this post is I feel like the summer was a blur as so much time was spent watering and picking this summer. I canned 112 jars of spaghetti sauce all quarts, 72 quart jars of enchilada sauce, 47 quarts of regular tomatoes, 84 pint jars of salsa. These are whet we did for our family, I had a lot of these jars just from my own stash from all our personal canning needs. We go thru about a 100 jars of spaghetti sauce every year sometimes I have even had to purchase it. The tomatoes I use for chili, beans, tomato pudding, butterbeans and tomatoes, soups. My boys have a already gone thru a case of the salsa....tacos, enchiladas, burritos...you name it chips and salsa. It seemed like we spent so much time canning and taking care of the farm. I keep on going despite the severe pain I suffer in my back and all over from the spinal stenosis and the fibromyalgia. I also dehydrated a ton of food for soups, and beans. We eat a lot of beans and pressure can black beans, pinto, navy, and kidney beans for soups, chili etc so with the dehydrated foods I just add them to the soups. I have done, onions, garlic, so many peppers I can't even being to tell you how many, and celery. I am still in peppers and actually have a dehydrator full as I type this. So as you can see this was a busy summer. Getting soap supplies, and canning jars this year has been a true struggle. There are no lids anywhere, no jars, no canning supplies....it's sad real sad. We raise our own chickens for meat and pressure can it and without jars we have NOTHING. I need these jars to feed my family so hopefully there will be some back on the shelves. Not to mention make my jams, pickles and elderberry syrup.
Since this blog is supposed to be about my art I wanted to show you the last paining I was able to complete while Skylar my granddaughter from Alabama was here for 44 days this summer. It was a wonderful time with her she was able to ride her bike all day everyday. We went so long without rain from mid June to mid July that when it actually did rain Dusty called me on my cell phone to tell me "its raining."  So Skybear spent a lot of time outside. We had a blast with her making crafts and using Perler beads to make things. We did go to the bird park...we arrived an hour before closing and it was like no one was there. I absolutely love that place. Oh well trying to play catch up like I do most often and telling you everything I can remember since the last post.

I love the painting. Of course I had a blast painting it....Skylar painted 13 canvases while I painted this...LOL!

Some of the sweet peppers I dehydrated

Just a few of the habaneros I have picked and dehydrated this year

Some of the salsa we canned

Applesauce we did it was like three cases, my boys add this to their oatmeal.

Of course while Skylar was here she helped me in the kitchen here we were canning chicken

This was my BEST year ever of figs so that means lots of fig jam, strawberry fig, and cranberry fig jam.

This was also the best year for grapes we ever had too SO THANKFUL

We hatched chicks while Skylar was here it was awesome and so exciting. She checked on the eggs everyday until the final day and it was one after another of hatched baby chicks.

At the bird park

Budgies at the bird park (my favorite part)

Skylar at the bird park we had so much fun

We had an amazing time with Skylar she loves Snapchat and every night we played on their pic after pic

We spent the Fourth of July together we decorated her bike and a cookout

Colten graduated this year Class of 2020 what a challenging year to graduate but he is very thankful as we are that he graduated. Well done Colten.

As you can see it has been a busy summer.....glad to se fall. I have been making my bracelets too late at night.

Until next time....

Week #19 of Donna Downey's 48 Weeks Workshop My first painting of Frida Kahlo "Don't Build a Wall"

Hello again as you know now we are all facing and living in unprecedented times. From lockdowns, to containments, quarantines, self-quarantines, rationing, limited supplies, no where to work if you fall outside of the essential personnel. Airlines, cruise ships, hotels, trains, any tour guides, recreational activities such as gyms, have all had to close or limit to essential needs only. Our medical staff are in high demands and are strained, along with our hospitals and the need for critical equipment. We have all faced uncertainties, but this is a silent unknown unforeseen circumstance, that we are all facing with no certainties known for our future.  Every person on this planet is in this position. What we all need to do is remain calm and take heed to recommendations and safe distances, sanitizing, excessive hand washing, and frankly stay PUT!!! No one can know who has it or where it will show up......PLEASE folks stop going places unless it is absolutely NEEDED!!! I totally get it!!! But seriously do you really need to go shopping for furniture right now, the FedEx driver told us they have been delivering furniture and shoes....etc. yes I can understand you moved or something or your only pair of shoes and a hole. I have talked to some folks and they tell me they out shopping for decor........I'm like SERIOUSLY!!! PLEASE FOLKS TAKE THIS SERIOUS!!! Think of your family members or others. This is no game....stop playing golf, stop having game nights with other families. You health depends on it!! I see these thing going on....and frankly its ludicrous. Oh and the beaches.......HELLO we are in a PANDEMIC!!! Stay off the beaches stop sharing hookah pipes, or any other forms of resectional needs keep it a PERSONAL use only!!!!!! I have seen these pics of YouTube which has been my only form of information or my mom sharing texts to me. Bruce and I have always been preppers being we have prepared ourselves for those HARD times. However with all our shows cancelled until further notice. Being farmers and feeding folks we face uncertainties to face we have been selling our eggs weekly to a grocery store and some honey last week I took him 22 dozen eggs and he called the next day to tell me he had only four left, he is a very tiny tiny store in Va. Beach but we are so thankful he has stepped up to help us with our extra products, since we have no markets. I will continue all my efforts to grow and produce what we can here to meet demands we have been selling our elderberry syrup and pickles, jams etc. If I have to I can bake or even make dinners to be delivered out of my USDA and CS Inspected kitchen. Like in war times "back porch dinners" when needed one family might of feed many just from dinners from their backdoor.

OKAY maybe enough on my soapbox but I have a lot of anxiety and stress at trying to keep many safe. I worked in the hospitals during the aids/hiv times and fears of ebola. I can remember getting a so called fax (they were not fax machines then) from the CDC on concerns of the Ebola outbreak back in 1989. So as I always say "what you don't know won't hurt you and what you do will" FEAR.
STAY CALM

So this was what I was working on before the trip to FLORIDA my first painting of Frida. I didn't actually get to finish until I got back and we were so far behind in just a few short days. Colten took care of everything while we were gone even did well with the plants that we have growing in the greenhouse, inside our house I have three full racks of shelves. I have planted extra to meet many needs this year.
I watched Donna Downeys video on the 48 Weeks workshop week #19 and I was like I just can't do another mostly black layer of painting as Bruce thinks automatically "something is wrong" my aunt even said on one of my other paintings that was majority black paint she said "this one looks like you were mad" okay I thought.......maybe I was it was my inner-self perhaps screaming....who knows. Art tells all....but as you can see I did go black with bright pops of beautiful colors.....and AN AMAZING WOMEN!! Who I have been a fan of for many many years!!! I have collected art, trinkets, and made dolls with Frida in mind. What I am saying in this painting.....is so true.....
Fridas quote "Don't build a wall around your suffering. It may devour you from the inside." is so much a personal feeling at the same time....many don't know but I suffer from chronic pain from the fibromyalgia and the spinal stenosis. Some days are better than others and I always keep going to the best I can. I feel like sometimes I build this wall. I have in the past many many times from being overweight at 300 lbs to separating from individuals due to anxiety. The list goes on but you get it! Now with what we are facing with this invisible enemy (as the President says) we all have had to build this wall in ways never foreseen. From borders closing to self quarantines to social distancing. Then I think of how when I went to all my shows and markets my friends how we embrace each other with hugs and sharing love with each other, sharing and trading items we make that has a wall around that too.  As you may know for any of those who have done the workshop this was TOTALLY a U-Turn for the inspiration Donna provided week #19.
I always like to show you how large this journal is......

If you would like to see any of the other weeks look below

The butterflies really added a nice touch and as you can see they were breaking thru the wall and onto the other side. One bright shiny butterfly makes it to the sweet beautiful roses.
There is a lot of texture. The thorns on the wall for the hard times and the suffering that Frida endured, thru her paintings you will see some of the pain and some good times as well.
I was very happy with my first painting of Frida and enjoyed the process immensely. Anything creative for me is exactly what I like to do....it can help ease the pain and fears and the anxiety.
I love my work here on the farm it just is sometimes you need an art break....and it is extremely hard to come by. Today Bruce and I are making sauerkraut we have 10 heads of cabbage and it will go a long way. We make this either in November or March. It's a normal staple here. My boys love it too.
Frida Kahlo

Here is a pic of the sauerkraut from a few years ago in half gallon jars.

With Easter coming and moms and dads looking for something for the kiddos to do this was a option maybe you had already bought some of maybe you can buy some offline....I looked at Amazon and they have them online and Walmart dot com has them too free shipping over $35. See videos below.

Week 8 of Donna Downey's 48 Weeks Journaling Workshop ~I AM MORE~

Hello again here is week 8 of 48 Weeks Workshop class with Donna Downey now this one I must of been inspired with a lot at the beginning of the class as I had already did this week sometimes around the third week or so as it is the third full layout in my journal see below the first version I did of this lesson. Since it was a graffiti theme. Dream is what I call her. I have started working on week 9 however I am struggling with inspiration or something....like in a slump or something.

IDK why I choose those numbers but I did and they are down now.

You can see how large this journal is. I had fun making this one too. There is something so satisfying of splatters.

This is a stamp by Donna Downey and it is so true.....which I thought was so appropriate for a this journal page.

You can really see the texture and the depth

The bird is my favorite

This is dream....well when I was a little girl there was a lady I used to talk to all the time whose name was Dreama and there is something about this journal page that reminds me of her...sometimes when your painting your feelings things just trigger memories.

Dreama was certainly an original.

While this number is unknown for why I used these particular ones

                                                             More texture and layers
those eyes

love the colors

again more splatter.....so satisfying

Just a quick post for this weekend ends, its been a great weekend with the celebration of fathers day.
Although my father is no longer with us there isn't a day that he isn't missed, a day that something or a reminder of him triggers a memory, I see him in my children, and here his voice while doing my work as to something he taught me. A father takes a special man and one that is missed.
I LOVE YOU RICHARD.

A special remembrance to him today I played songs that he played while I was a little girl.

Happy Fathers Day to everyone

If you would like to see

see the rest of the weeks here

Stay tuned for Week 9 I will try to get it done asap
Enjoy your week....
Best,

Week 6 of Donna Downey's 48 Weeks Painting Class ~Down at the Poppy Fields~

Hello again and can you hardly believe so quick for me to make a new blog post??? I mean like WOW.....I am so n a roll....however it will soon be tomato season which they will just all about be ready all the same time....as to the looks of it. The tomatoes are doing wonderful and we just received
a lot of rain.....SO YEAH THANKFUL!!! I have been picking okra, onions, three cherry tomatoes, squash, Swiss chard, and green peppers galore, sweet banana peppers, and the malabar spinach, Despite the dry times we actually have a successful start this year.  It is 11:41 pm and as I type this Skylar is laying beside me sleeping so soundly with the faint sounds of snoring. Bruce is sleeping and the dogs are beside me curled up for the night. All the boys are sleeping soundly awaiting yet only two days until the end of this school year. Since I suffer from severe back pain, I have had to stop and rest a bit here lately from all the laborious work. Well after many years have gone by I decided to return to my class I purchased in what I believe to be December of 2013. Here it is 2019, so Don't ya think its time to finish the class???? Yep I agree. So here I am finished up Week 6 of the 48 weeks by Donna Downey you can see the class here......48 Weeks I have certainly enjoyed myself. Donna makes you feel like you are right there in her studio and you just paint!!!! No worries of the blank page, just paint! I had never actually painted a poppy before until this class.....I just like to plant them, photograph them, and visually enjoy them....well now its paint them.  Jewelee wouldn't move out of the picture so you see her feet and belly.
The colors #love

Enjoyed the whole process
so much texture and depth the piece
Beautiful

Reminds me of our poppies in the fields of wildflowers

Can't you just see them dancing in the gentle breeze

the sun shining on them

the honeybees flowing by ever so gracefully and carrying pollen on their legs

more texture

Today one of dear customers whom has been coming and buying from us since the beginning days of the farmers market. He worked night shift and would stop by after work. Well since then he no longer at the job and is not able to stop by the farmers market anymore so he just comes to the farm to get his honey, pickles, goat cheese, soaps, salves, eggs, chickens, pretty much something of everything I make plus he gets thing for his family. He is an older gentleman and tells us of the stories of his grandma and grandpa and how they farmed and made things. His mom is 94 and still cooking pies and cakes but lives in Florida so he doesn't get to enjoy the sweets of her baking. I used to make him all the recipes he requested but these days I am not baking as much just mostly for my own family now. One can only do so much and with all we have going on baking is not one of the many things I did in my past. Well I better go to bed.....now so I can get up early and begin the day with milking goats....which Skylar says she is doing tomorrow.....haha she will be still asleep.

go here

This weekend Colten will be at Smithfield and we will be at The Tiny House Festival in the OBX. I am excited a tiny house festival can I hear a YES!!!  I can't wait to look around in them....

Have a great rest of the week and if I don't make it back to blog again before the weekend have a good weekend.
